In a Program for the Fall!

It’s sort of (but not much) like being pregnant.

I got the good news about a month ago, but I wanted to get through filling out some of the forms, and my vetting by their HR Department. But now I feel like I can publicly announce it…

I got into a Clinical Pastoral Education program for the fall.

Starting in September, I’ll be attending California Pacific Medical Center’s part-time Extended CPE Unit program. After I did the interviews for full-year programs last year but didn’t get in, one of the chaplains who I interviewed with told me they had liked me a lot, but as it was a paid internship it was really competitive, and I was mostly going up against applicants who were already clergy or had Master’s of Divinity degrees. While these aren’t required to get into the programs, they are becoming more and more expected. She said that if I wasn’t planning to go back for another master’s (I already have an MFA in Creative Writing), I could buff up my CV for the next round of application by doing one unit of CPE somewhere.

While I was disappointed not to get in somewhere, I was not unaware of the landscape, so I was glad to have more options of forward motion.

So now this is how the Fall/Winter is shaping up: starting in September, 3-4 days a week, commuting to San Francisco to do training at one or more of the CPMC hospitals (California Campus, Davies Campus, Pacific Campus, and St. Luke’s Campus), and a five-day Mirroring & Guide Skills workshop down in Death Valley in December. September is also High Holidays, with Rosh Hashana (September 14-15), Days of Awe, Yom Kippur (September 23), Sukkot (September 28-October 4), then Simchat Torah (October 6). Esmé starts 8th grade at the end of August, and of course I’ll still be doing projects for Full Cup Consulting, and Rachel has her private practice. And I will make an effort to use this blog more like a journal during these times, as I assume there will be a lot more to say.

Thank goodness the bees wind down for the winter in November.

So here we are, in the middle of life–work, learning, family. Starting in September, If you contact me and it takes a few days for

Felicidades, Adam! Think you’ll ever do the M Div?

I would love to do it, Lisa, but on the other hand I would like to choose it rather than have to.
